On October 20th and 21st, the Tobin Project’s National Security initiative held a workshop on Reassessing Threat Assessment from the early nuclear era. Tobin’s work on Reassessing Threat Assessment seeks to build understanding of the practices and processes that yield accurate and reliable assessments of national security risks facing the United States.

On June 1st and 2nd, the Tobin Project hosted a Conference on the History of American Democracy, convening eminent historians, political scientists, and law scholars to discuss the institutions, mechanisms, and social norms that have contributed to the foundation and evolution of American politics and democracy. By drawing from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and expertise, the Tobin Project seeks to broaden scholarly understanding of how democracy has worked over time and how it might flourish in the future.

On August 4th and 5th, the Tobin Project convened a Conference on Inequality and Decision Making, bringing together leading scholars from across the social and behavioral sciences to explore the effects of economic inequality on individual behavior and decision making. Across two days of in-depth discussion, participants examined the ways in which rising inequality might influence the perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors of Americans.

On May 20th, the Tobin Project convened policymakers and scholars across a range of disciplines for a meeting in Washington, DC on “Reassessing Threat Assessment: Building a Better Framework for Evaluating Strategic Threats.” Participants explored where new academic scholarship on past threat assessments could help develop the tools we need to accurately and reliably assess threats we face today—whether from state actors, non-state actors, or broader trends in technology, economics, or the international political system.

How can the United States craft a sustainable national security strategy in a world characterized by shifting threats, sharp resource constraints, and a changing balance of power? For the last three years, members of Tobin’s National Security initiative have worked to address this question. This work has already led to several widely-read articles in academic journals, and Tobin is excited to announce that an edited volume of the research will be published by Oxford University Press.
