In July, the Tobin Project continued sharing the findings of Preventing Regulatory Capture: Special Interest Influence and How to Limit It with a panel at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics. Volume editor Dan Carpenter and contributor Bill Novak discussed the book’s new definition of capture and the historical development of the capture concept, while scholars Nicholas Bagley, Tom Baker, and Mary Furner critiqued elements of the book and applied its lessons to new fields, such as insurance regulation. The audience asked insightful questions about the research, on topics including the possibility of capturing political parties, Furner’s idea of “ideological capture,” and more.
