In an April issue of The Economist, an article examines the effects of rising inequality on the reality of the "American dream," and references research from the upcoming Tobin Project conference on the economic, political, and social consequences of rising inequality.
Three conference papers and presenters were highlighted: Christopher Jencks's (Harvard Kennedy School) exploration of the relationship between rising inequality and gaps in educational attainment, Isabel Sawhill's (Brookings Institution, Economics) work on the effect of education and family structure on socioeconomic status, and Timothy Smeeding (University of Wisconsin-Madison, La Follette School of Public Affairs) and Jeffrey Thompson's (UMass-Amherst, PERI) examination of the recession's impact on certain trends of inequality.
